CLASS VIEW PRO
The Project
The Center for the Collaborative Classroom is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to providing curricula that support the academic, ethical, and social development of children. ClassView Pro simplifies collecting, synthesizing, and sharing student assessment data. Teachers can keep close tabs on student progress.
To expand into more schools and add new features, we needed a full redesign of the CRM. The new tool allows teachers to simply and quickly create classroom, group, and student-level data sets, measure student progress, and aggregate reporting.
My Role
I was brought on as a product designer, overseeing all aspects of the redesign.
Challenge
The hierarchy between district, school, teacher, classes, and groups is complex. In addition, schools might offer after-school programs, where coaches work with smaller groups of students. Those groups are based on the learning level of a student, not the class they are part of. Our app had to be flexible to accommodate this. The permission system had to be robust.
Discovery Phase
I did a thorough audit of the existing platform. This included the Learning Portal, through which teachers or admins could access learning materials. Both, the portal and admin tool were outdated. The UI was clunky and inconsistent, the UX was hard to use.
Process
While this was a complex project, our development process was agile and iterative. I worked in conjunction with frontend and backend engineering to deliver small, consumable increments. At the same time, I came up with a larger framework that would tie everything together. The CTO, product manager, and I met regularly to work through product features. The engineering team had access to my designs, so we were able to spot potential challenges early on.
We had already started with the visual design when we received a new requirement: A large district requested ClassView Pro to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards. We quickly worked through the necessary changes and additions. For me, this mostly meant checking all colors to ensure full compliance.
The visual design is consistent with the iPad / Android apps. The Figma design system shows reusable components and is applied by developers and PMs. Since it's dynamic and collaborative, it continues to grow.
Final Outcome
ClassView Pro launched in July 2020. Several larger districts across the country purchased the program since then, and we have received enthusiastically positive feedback. Admins and teachers love the ease-of-use of the platform.
I continue working with the team in a consulting role to ensure UX / UI consistency.
